What is the purpose of the introduction?

The introduction establishes the context and reason for your article. You will provide an overview of the relevant extant literature that provides the justification for your study, and you will summarize the gaps in the science that show how your study will (at least partially) fill them. Depending on the allowable length of your article, you may need to be somewhat brief and focused, but this will also depend on the depth of your study and how complex it is. Organize the information to present the more general aspects of the topic early in the introduction, then narrow toward the more specific topical information that provides context, finally arriving at your statement of purpose and rationale. The background information should be cited properly with the most updated references possible. The introduction is typically concluded with a stated purpose in the form of a hypothesis, question, or problem you are investigating.
